Shelly's is a favorite for many years. The consistently excellent food and the delightful wait staff make this a pleasant leisurely paced dining experience. The staff are always friendly and go out of their way to be helpful without being obtrusive. I have never had food there that was not prepared properly and well. I do miss the smoked turkey legs they used to have onthe menu - they were beyond description. Most recently I took acquaintances, visiting from the east coast, to Shelly's for lunch. They were charmed by the atmosphere and raved about the food. Some mutual friends are coming from the east and they were told that the MUST eat at Shelly's. Excellent and Delightful - An absolute must

We were delighted to fine a quiet, warm atmosphere with a round table for the seven of us. Prices were remarkably reasonable for the "upscale" adjective used in the description of said place. But then, the term upscale was somewhat misleading.

Service was good, however, the wait staff seemed a bit overworked which was fine since we were enjoying a lesisurely meal with goof family and were in no hurry to enjoy our culinary delights. The buffalo wings were unique, good. The spinach, flat bread thing was excellent. The drinks were adaquate but then not many bartenders know how to make a really good brandy manhatten these days.

The meal provided us with many pleasant surprises. The breaded sweet potato is a must have on your visit. Superb! The carmalized onion mashed potato and the twice baked potato tied for a close second in the delight area. The duck was very good, the brisket excellent, the prime rib delicious, the walleye very good. Three of our group ordered the ribs. My what a fine rack! Surely they come on larger plates. While they were enjoyed, I heard no ravings out of anyone and all took some home. My impression was a bit dry and quiet flavorless. The squash was so goood someone later noticed she had eaten the skin.

Ah, the pop overs. An advertised speciality. Ours arrived hot but somewhat overdone to be considered top drawer. They all got eaten. I noticed several adjoining tables later in the evening sporting golden brown, delectable looking pop overs.

The deserts looked wonderful, howerver, the three plates of ribs had done our crew in and all declined to venture into the world of cheese cake and chocolate.

Will I go again? Probably if I am in the area. Will I rush back tomorrow? Definitely not, since it has been three days and I have not been back.

The logs, the fireplaces, the comfortable chairs and the nice wait staff makes it a good place to spend a quiet, relaxed evening out with a good companion. Go for it!

Crab cakes were crabless, textureless, and tasteless. Walleye fish-n-chips were miniscule (2 pieces) and the basket was padded to the top with cold, soggy, greasy fries. The ribs were the worst my wife ever had; she didn't finish them. The waiter didn't remember a request for more dressing, and then was rude when he brought it. For the $30 per person (food) tab, I'd say this was a truly miserable gastronomical experience.

As a life-long resident of the western suburbs, I can honestly say that Shelly's is a gem.

It is our family's favorite restaurant, and we often go on Friday nights. This is the night that they run a special coupon we clip from the Minnesota Outdoor News.

The head chef Doug almost always comes out to greet our family personally. He is a great guy and always strives to ensure his customers are satisfied.

The great rural Minnesota cabin setting is more than worth the trip away from downtown Minneapolis. The pop-overs are a complementary treat for dinner and are supurb. The seasonal menu featuring fresh fish and steak. The crab stuffed mushrooms are personally my favorite entree.
The "Birch Bar" is a signature setting that offers a great place to talk and smoke a cigar. They have an assortment of Minnesota's own micro-brewed beer and premium spirits.
Overall I enjoy the restaurant and would encourage everyone to go with an open mind. Most likely you will leave with a great experience.

Heard the ads for Shelly's on the radio featuring fish fry and free popovers.
Called Friday about 7pm and was told there would be no problem..not busy..no reservations needed...come on in.
Arrived at Shelly's 8:15pm..parking lot half full..oh good.. son's birthday dinner is on.
2 couples with reservations waiting..bored bartender..nearly empty dining room..no one greets us or even in the area.
After 5 to 10 minutes a waitress cruises by and tells us to leave because we don't have reservations..after some discussion, the manager, who is also the chef, comes out and explains that they are full and we need reservations and also implies that we should leave.
The 2 couples with reservations that are waiting, are agained stalled by the waitress so they leave.
We're seated, all service is slow..food is great...no bread of any kind served or offered. Other tables besides ours were refused popovers with a varity of stories (out of popovers..take too long to make, stop by anytime and ask for some)
Husband saw trays of popovers being scarfed down by the crew in the kitchen on his way back from the bathroom. After leaning on the waitress, she managed to find 3 popovers for our party of 6 to take home.
This restaurant is an excellent place to stop for someone working on their doctorate in abnormal pyschology specializing in passive aggressive behaviors.
I would recommend that Shelly's be shrink wrapped, held in storage for 40 years and reopened along the line of Gibb's Farm as a tourist attraction...I suggest popovers as a token gift to school children and others who've paid the full admission to tour.
I would recommend that any of the staff do a unique and wonderful thing...go out to eat and watch how they do it.
I would recommend that the ads featuring your wonderful fish fry would specify the day it is held.
Thank you so much for your attention.
