About Ole Hickory Pit BBQ
Ole Hickory Pit Barbeque originated in Paducah, Kentucky where Murvin Ramage opened a little restaurant called Plantation BBQ in 1941. Folks came from miles around to get the real hickory smoked taste of Murvin's bbq which he cooked in specially designed masonry pits built himself. Murvin's small restaurant did a booming business until a fire destroyed it. However, by this time Murvin's special hand built pits had become so well known that other people and bbq places wanted him to build pits for them too. Murvin built many pits for other folks in the Paducah & Western KY region in which many still are being used this day. Now Murvin's son, Kenney Ramage is carrying on the same family tradition Murvin started in 1941 by opening Ole Hickory Pit BBQ in Louisville, KY. Ken and his wife Sharon and the family continue the western Kentucky tradition of using fresh (not canned) high quality meats and slowly cooking over real natural wood without the use of charcoal, chips, liquid smoke and other such ways to make the meat appear smoked. All of the smoking is done right her in our smoke house just behind the kitchen using the same pits hand built by Murvin. We cook our meals slow. 14-16 hours or longer over a smoldering fire. Another important ingredient that makes our bbq the best is our real homemade all natural bbq sauce. We cook it right here and you can buy some extra to take home for you own bbq and burgers. Our family recipe has never been altered and is still cooked right here in our own kitchen. It certainly beats anything you can buy in the stores.
Here at Ole Hickory Pit we are very proud of our natural process to bring you the best bbq you will ever eat. In fact if you have time Ken would be right proud to take you out to see our pits. You'll come to appreciate what it takes to make real natural wood smoked bbq. Of course after you eat it we believe you will agree with us it's worth it. Thanks for dropping by!
