Restaurant Description

Whether you love seafood or more traditional menu items, you'll love the Ristorante Portofino. Besides the romantic atmosphere, enhanced by the sounds of the waves, you'll find something on our imaginative, unusual menu that will make your mouth water.

Come in and find out why readers of the San Mateo Times voted the Ristorante Portofino "BEST ROMANTIC DINNER" spot two years consecutively.

The menu selections created by our world-renown chef, Giovanni Galati can best be described as authentic Old World Northern and Southern Italian cuisine delicately prepared with a contemporary style and elegance.

Along with offering OVER 45 DIFFERNET TYPES OF HOMEMADE PASTA, such as Linguine alla Vodka e Caviale, Lobster Ravioli, Penne alla Silana and Gnocchi Fondenti, our visionary chef has imported from his travels some very authentic and intriguing dishes. His exquisite creation of a unique seafood cioppino combining crab legs, mussels, clams, and shrimp in his own "Red Bone Sauce" has caused quite a stir with our customers.

Other standouts on the menu include the Salmone con Gamberoni alla Crema, grilled salmon, sautéed in a special cream sauce with prawns and dried tomatoes, and Tonno Portofino - fresh tuna cooked to order with fresh tomatoes, green olives, capers and fresh herbs.

And his other very authentic creations include Filetto ai Funghi Porchini, a filet mignon cut with chopped Porcini mushrooms in a fine cream sauce, and Chicken Saltimbocca, a whole breast sautéed in white wine with aged prosciutto, sage and fresh mozzarella cheese.

If you're not in the mood for meat or seafood, our chef has conjured up some incredible vegetarian entrees, such as Involtini di Melanzane con Ricotta, a delicately prepared breaded slice of eggplant rolled in fresh ricotta cheese, baked in a rich ground tomato marinara sauce.

a diner from San Francisco
I have been taking guests on a regular basis for
the Sunday brunch, dinners, and a very special guest to the Mother's Day buffet. Generally, I have been pleased, and in particular, we have loved the clam chowder. A friend sometimes gets a quart to go.
I have an associate who was just in SF briefly and
needed to catch a flight, so we couldn't manage
to get there for dinner tonight (6/4/13), but we
thought we'd go by and try to get a chowder to go.
The staff at the front desk was curt, condescending, and a reprehensible representative
of the establishment. I was appalled. Instead of
even attempting to check with the kitchen staff
to see if our request could be accommodated, the two women snidely suggested that we go across the
street and get some from Nick's. Then one of them
(who was especially offensive) informed me that
the clam chowder is NOT EVEN ON THEIR REGULAR
MENU, so I couldn't get any anyway (it is on the
daily menu). We were just abruptly dismissed as an intrusion of their time (apparently standing behind the counter chatting at 3:00 in
the afternoon, waiting on no one). I have also
been taking guests for years to Castognola's on
the wharf and to the House of Prime Rib. Neither
establishment has ever remotely employed staff
that behaved so rudely and crudely toward me and
my guests, and I will simply recommend these
alternatives from now on. Sadly, they have lost
more than one or two customers as a consequence
of their very poorly trained staff.
