Let me tell you about café in a town that had the gall, to act like they were next to the Katy mills mall. Were not talking about the famous town hall, were talking bout a blink eyed town called “Tomball” A place where I wouldn’t take my ex’s, talking bout they have the best chicken fried steak in Texas. So cold inside I had to go back to the car to get my baby’s sweater, we sitting in the cold waiting to eat what tasted like beer battered leather. When you first go inside the place looks nice, but we should have known better seeing that it felt like ice. Thinking bout that steak had my tongue all wet, and I felt even better when I seen that they seated a lot of family sets. When I looked at the menu I said to myself, this is something I can afford, especially when I seen they had seated a member of the family with the last name “Kingsford” One good thing about it is they had some good bread, but what the waitress brought out was completely something else instead. The chef’s idea of a cf steak was pretty dam rough, and they knew when they sent that thing out it was teeth breaking tough. They knew eating that Frisbee would be much of a strife, cause they were probably back there laughing when they saw us trying to cut it with that a dull ass butter knife. So tough I was thinking about suing, 10 minutes had passed and I was still chewing. Hey I’m telling everyone this is no jive, I truly believe that Guy Fieri wouldn’t put this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. The only good thing we ate w/ease, was the nice tender and creamy macaroni & cheese. I’ll never again roll down 249 and open that door, just to eat that horrible crap for $23.34. All and all there is one thing I have to say and that is I’ll never go back there not on any day.

When I was a kid we lived next door to a woman named Irma. Irma and her mother had been cooking at Goodsons Cafe for 20 years, 20 years ago and the food was amazing. The macaroni and cheese was delightful, fresh mashed potatoes, cream gravy that made you want to slap yo' mamma, and THE best chicken fried steak I had EVER tasted. My husband is not from Texas and had never even heard of chicken fried steak, so I took him to the place I knew had the best steak in town; Goodsons. We were deeply disappointed. The steak was still good, but the gravy tasted like something from a package (at least it wasn't white...), and the mac and cheese was elbow macaroni with some fake cheese sauce on it instead of that yummy casserole they used to serve. The rolls were delicious but there was margarine on the table. The food in front of us vaguely resembled the memories I had carried with me of Goodsons Cafe from my youth. I don't know how the restaurant mad it on the show 101 Chowdown Countdown because I would not call what Goodsons is serving these days the best that Texas has to offer.

Great experience. This is a GREAT restaurant for date night, a night out with your spouse or dinner with clients. We just moved to Tomball and we were excited to get a great meal of this quality in such a small town.

If you don't enjoy the food at Mel's you dont know food or ain't from Texas. Chicken fried steak bests Goodsons. Fried catfish was never better in Louisana. Wished the were on Spring Cypress.
