During the depression, polenta was served due to the shortage of meat. Moonshine was made in a huge clay vat, located under the present main dining room. Three tunnels that led to several railroad tracks were used to roll out the barrels to be shipped out on waiting trains. It is rumored that this was the favorite hangout of Al Capone's when he was in the Chicago area.
In the 1980's it was purchased and renamed "The Headquarters" and remained that for a few years. The house and restaurant were closed for several years. The Venetian club used it for one year, for meetings while their new building was being built.
It was purchased again in 1994, and renamed Caffe Greco. The previous owner's cousin had traveled to Rome and visited the famous "Antico Caffe Greco", and found out that the owners were shirtail relations to him. The menu was comprised of family recipes for Succo, Eggplant and Lasagna.
Ben Harding purchased the restaurant in 1996 and brought more family recipes. He is known for his delicious "Special Salad", known to be the best in Rockford. Ben has a long history of being a chef in Rockford. Some of the restaurants where he previously cooked at include: Nino's Steak House, North Town Manor and J.P Hooks along with many others.
"Bernie", as most of his customers and friends call him, has perfected the family "Succo" recipe which he cooks for two days. The "Steak Sicilian", is also one of his signature dishes prepared with garlic, crackers and wine. Friday nights there are several choices of fish, prepared several ways.
We truly hope you enjoy your meal at Caffe Greco and will return soon.
