A better than average and friendly eat in the rough atmosphere. The view in the rear section
on the "porch" is great. The orders are prepared soon after you select from the posted menu at the interior window. No menus, no wait staff. Cafetria style without the extra help. The lobsters are not precooked then reheated. You see the one/ones you want in holding tanks and they are then weighed, priced and cooked for you. You get to see that they are not listless or worse. In a netted bag with your number on it. The wait is worth it. The plates are average to very good abd plentiful. The fries are always great. The onion rings not. Forget the chicken strips. Even the burger is OK for a seafood place. Not every one wants seafood. So take the person who doesn't like sea food. Enjoy an ear of corn with loads of butter when in season. Also, stop next door and get a piece of pizza or two and bring it in . Enjoy. It's lot less pricey than Essex. A lot !

The food is great; the service is fast; the ambiance is cozy and quaint. Prices are competitive; but the food is superlative and with generous portions it makes Markeys a wonderful value. Anyone not loving Markeys doesn't live in the real world!

Being born and raised in Salem MA and later moving to Philadelphia, PA my family and I make a yearly trip to Essex to have a lobster dinner. My sister who lives in Peabody took us to Markeys a few years ago and we have been coming back ever since. The lobsters are much fresher tasting, I could use the words hot and succulent, along with the clams (steamed and fried) everything is just superb. Can't wait for this summer so we can visit again.

This is an "Eat in the rough" restaurant. So any review must be tempered by that knowledge. Pick your own lobster from multiple tanks that are easy to view. Prices set to size and quality and escalate thusly. They are not cooked first, you then buy, then they are reheated. Be patient waiting for your number to be called. Relax and enjoy. Try a Lobster Roll that is 1/2 the price of the pricier places in Essex and Ipswich Ma. The fries are very good, but the onion rings leave some to be desired. The combination plates are adequate and again, cost a little, sometimes a lot less than the pricier seashore establishments. The view is nice. The counter staff is friendly,(Generally there is no wait staff.) So pick up after yourself, please, as we all enjoy a just cleared table. A note of caution, watch your step into the WC's.

Food quality has dropped off the past 6 mo.s. Clams have been over fried quality of condiments (in packets) went from good to very poor, switched to cheeper stuff. Went there every week last year. Not planning to go back again this year. DROPPED FROM MY LIST

It is the best casual seafood restaurant on the East coast. Great food. Great prices. Every time we are in the area, we have to go to Markey's!
