In 1903, the first of three Greek immigrant brothers arrived in America after a long voyage across the ocean. Frank Regas was 14 years old and did not understand English. He had a $100 loan in his pocket from his father. This money, along with his intuition and a "can-do" spirit, were all that he had to pursue the American dream in his "new world."

Frank landed a job that required few communication skills as a dishwasher in a restaurant. He soon realized that if he learned the jobs of others he could be promoted when a job opening became available. He later became part of a crew laying railroad tracks throughout the United States. During this time America was adding states to the union in the west and the railroad was much needed. As he worked on the railroad his younger brother, George, joined him. Together, they honed their language skills, learned valuable lessons, and were favored because of their work ethic.

The Regas brothers, having lived in 38 states, finally settled in Knoxville, TN prior to World War I. They lived together in a small efficiency apartment and went to work at the Ocean Cafe in 1919, later purchasing the establishment. Their brother, Harry, joined them in Knoxville around 1921, working first as a waiter at the Ocean Cafe. The three brothers lived together and worked together for many years. In 1924, the Regas brothers moved their operation to 318 1/2 North Gay Street. Their Astor Cafe was located in the bottom floor of the Watauga Hotel. The hotel and cafe were welcome refuge for weary travelers passing through Knoxville on the trains of the Southern Railway.
