Mexican Food & Culture History

Restaurant Description

Las Palomas Restaurant & Bar was founded by the late Javier Corona and his wife, Amelia, in 1983. Javier was a retired diplomat and an accomplished artist-his art can be seen hanging on the walls of the restaurant. Amelia traveled Mexico and the world with Javier, gathering recipes and sharpening her skills as a superb chef and hostess. With Javier's taste and style and Amelia's ability to implement and refine their creations in the kitchen, they produced the unique dining experience of Las Palomas.

Las Palomas relishes the essence of this unique dining experience. Mealtime is very important in Mexican culture; it is a time dedicated to the enjoyment of food and family. This unhurried experience cultivates the enjoyment of building family bonds. Most of the Las Palomas recipes are from the interior of Mexico, stretching from Veracruz to Yucatán to Oaxaca. Some of these "heirloom" recipes are several generations old. They are complemented with new offerings that continue the restaurant's commitment to quality and freshness. Please allow time for each plate to be prepared for your dining pleasure. Take the time to savor your meal and your dining companions.

The food and dining experience at Las Palomas have also been praised by local, state, and national critics. Many loyal customers have dined at Las Palomas regularly for 10, 20, or more years. MariCarmen Corona Dale, the founders' daughter, now owns and operates the restaurant. She strives to continue her parents' traditions and is serving their third generation of customers-indeed, sometimes grandparents, parents, and children eat together at Las Palomas. MariCarmen has expanded and remodeled the restaurant to add private and semi-private dining rooms. To enhance the dining experience, live music is also offered three nights a week (Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays).

Being a regular user of Active Diner I was amazed that there were no postings about Las Palomas. This restaurant offers only interior food from Mexico with wonderful authentic recipes. My wife had the shrimp in chipotle sauce (about $11.00)and they were incredible. I had a plate with a mole enchilada, a green enchilada, cochinita pibil, guacamole and rice and beans. This was great and since I was born in Veracruz, I appreciated the "real" flavor which I have missed for so long. In my opinion this is one of the best mexican restaurants in Austin.
The only problem that we had was that it was very busy and we had to wait for more than 30 minutes to get a table although we waited while sipping pretty good margaritas.
The restaurant is located in the corner of a Westlake shopping center and it may be hard to find but it is definetly worthwhile looking for it.
