I visited Lafayette City Grill after reading several reviews online. I don't live in Lafayette, Indiana so I am not familiar with Lafayette City Grill's competition.

Lafayette City Gill is a modern, high class restaurant. If you are accustomed to more classic gourmet restaurants you may not like the feel (i.e. no table cloth, open ceilings, salad fork identical to dinner fork, etc.) It does have a fireplace and a grand piano which unfortunately was not in use. The it was a little chilly in the dining room but we felt it acceptable considering the temperature was 3°F outside. It was a little noisy but within acceptable limits.

The portions were more than adequate but not too large and the presentation was excellent. The starter choices consisted of tomato juice, cauliflower soup, or sweet potato clam chowder. Both my date and I dislike tomatoes, sweet potatoes and cauliflower so we were disappointed by our choices. We both tried the sweet potato clam chowder and found it palletable.

For the entree I had the crab cakes and my date had the salmon. My crab cakes were delicious and well presented. They were the best I have had outside of Maryland. However, I do note that the crab cakes are served with plate of fries, which detracted from the crab cakes' presentation. My date's food had an average presentation and she appeared to enjoy it.

I also note that the price was reasonable for what is offered. Our dinner for two without alcohol or dessert and excluding tip was around $40.

This is the nicest and most exciting restaurant in the Lafayette area, and growing each month in recognition and popularity. The ambience is outstanding -- beautiful and serene decor -- followed by a subtle and professional wait staff that is attentive to your needs without intruding on the dining experience. From the hostess, to the wait staff, to the wine steward and manager, there is a team of people working hard to ensure you enjoy your meal and your time in their restaurant.
The menu includes an outstanding selection of fish, steaks, and even a vegan dish, providing a great place for a group of diners with varying dietary preferences. Although there are occasional variations in food temperature, and the salad choices could be more exciting, in the many times I have eaten here, the food has been outstanding, with an elegant yet simple presentation. Prices are typical for the classy steakhouse, but those on a budget can find a delicious entree for less than $20.
This is a big city dining experience in a wonderful downtown location for Greater Lafayette locals. An outstanding choice for that special meal, as well as a comfortable and elegant location for a middle of the week meal with your colleagues, or weekend jaunt with good friends.
Bon appetit!

We were told we would be seated in 25 minutes. Instead it took nearly an hour, even though I could see more than 4 tables open after 30 minutes of waiting. The salads were soggy and over-peppered but the seafood was OK.

I was one of a party of 8 guys. I arrived a little later than the others and had to wait almost 15 min before a waiter came to take my drink order (beer or wine). No table cloth on table. Orders for food were quickly taken. The salad was just a simple green salad (no choices) with a very nice peach vinaigrette dressing. The steak entree I ordered came only with mashed potatos. No choice of baked or fries. The meat itself was OK, but the sauce/gravy needed work. I do not recall being told about any dessert, and we moved on to coffee. My total bill (including a 20% service charge) for salad, entree and two glasses of red wine was $55. I do not recommend this restaurant, although I noted that they seemed to be doing a good business for a Wednesday night. Still, the place is newly opened, and I do not see them surviving unless there are drastic improvements.
