I am coming up on my 14th wedding anniversary, a time of year when I reflect on how poorly my first wedding anniversary went because of Chez Jean restaurant. With an $85 gift certificate from my mother in law and a reservation for dinner and the night, we headed out on the almost 2-hour drive to the restaurant. We had read in the paper about financial problems the restaurant was having, but we had called several times to confirm that they were still open for business, including the night before our reservation. When we arrived, the restaurant was empty, with a person on site claiming they had been robbed. (The thief had taken all their table linens and napkins but left several pieces of technology, including a digital cash register, adding machine and fax machine). It ruined our evening, as we were out in the middle of nowhere without a backup plan; we just turned around and drove home, stopping at a Fazzoli's for a quick bite. The restaurant soon reopened, and the owners refused to honor the gift certificate, claiming that they were new and had no obligation to the debt.
