This is by far the best resturant in Columbia based on value and atmosphere. This was a former railroad passenger terminal, remarkable restoration, super high ceilings. This is our special occasion place. Better than the Chris Steak House by far.

I am attending a course at Ft. Jackson, and our class made a reservation there for March 11th. One of our classmates had reserved a private room to hold a baby shower, and the reservation had been confirmed at least twice. When we began arriving at 6:30pm we found that for some reason the room had been given to a group that had just shown up at 6pm. Our reservation was for 6:30, and I fail to see the point of reservations if they're not honored. We waited over an hour and 15 minutes for them to put a few tables together. If it had been my decision we would not have waited. One of my classmates had a similar problem with a reservation this past weekend. When she arrived at the time of her reservation her table had been given away, and they had her wait 35 minutes. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant while I am in Columbia, nor will I recommend it to anyone I know, even though the food was good.

Empty for a good reason. The food was seasoned only with [too much] salt and the server could not have cared less that it was poorly made. There was no one at the desk on the way out to mention the problems to.

I grew up in Columbia and discovered El Menchaca back in 1977 when working just down the street from them. I continued to eat there until they closed. My wife and I had eaten there hundreds of times over the years and truly miss the authentic Mexican
