My new friend thought I had been having a bad week so suggested he come out to High River and pick me up to go to Longview for lunch. To say I was skeptical would be an understatement, but it IS a beautiful drive and he DOES have a mustang convertible. SO...off we go to the home of the best beef jerky on earth.

The restaurant is the main floor of an old house. Totally eclectic, but fun, bright, welcoming and very clean. There was the lunch menu and I was really disappointed to see only mainly sandwiches when my friend suggested the strip loin steak sandwich, which I grudgingly agreed to. I hadn't had breakfast and was starving. I wanted FOOD!

We were the only patrons in there for lunch as it was during the week and so it only took a few minutes to get our food. I thought I had died and gone to heaven! On top of a slice of garlic toast was a slab-o-steak! At least 12 ounces of thick, juicy, extra-aged prime Alberta beef! And with it a simple salad of greens, carrot slivers and honey mustard dressing. No potato, no fries, just that hunk of meat and salad. It seemed to be done a little too well for me, but then I took a bite. When a steak is done THIS well it can be rare all the way to medium well and will be just as good taste-wise. We didn't talk much except to mumble a bit and beam at the waiter each time he came over to check on us. (I think he may have even called me cutie once, lol.) I couldn't finish but just HAD to try a dessert of chocolate cake with ice cream and fresh berries. The cake wasn't sweet and had no icing, it was just hot and yummy. Ok...I did finish that! Presentation as well was stunning. I worked at SAIT for over 6 years and KNOW what is good and not, and this was as good as I've seen as far as taste and presentation.

I tried going out the next day for lunch but had missed it and tried on Saturday night without a reservation. There was no way I could get in, but the lovely owner, whose family lives above and all work in the restaurant, felt so bad that he said when I go back it will be on the house. I've heard rumours of salmon, pork tenderloin, duck...I WILL go back, as soon and as often as possible. For MY money it just doesn't get any better than this!
A diner from Calgary gave an overall rating of 5  out of 5 stars on June 27, 2010 @ 12:24 PM

Just returned from yet another visit to my favorite restaurant, and with friends who'd never been. Never have I been disappointed and last night was no exception. Our reservation was for seven, and my company arrived at my home on the southern edge of Calgary for the drive through the foothills before dinner. We took 22x west then turned south to Millarville and Turner Valley before heading south to Longview. The lush, green hills, warm sunlight, and magnificent Rockies in the distance set the stage for yet another superb meal at the Longview Steakhouse. The service is personal, warm, and prompt and one feels that one has been invited into a private home for dinner. I cannot resist the seafood bisque which is never quite the same but always delicious - rich, flavorful, and with lots of baby shrimp. My Atlantic scallops in tarragon cream with mushrooms were a delight and my beef tenderloin with jumbo prawns in bernaise sauce was beautifully presented and cooked to my liking. My friends feasted on the house salad and rutabaga soup for starters and then on to the halibut and tandoori salmon respectively. They raved, but not as much as they savored the chocolate mousse cake and citrus cheesecake for dessert. The best part of this restaurant is that it is so completely unexpected and is so much more than the name implies. The value is outstanding and the quality of the cuisine unsurpassed. A friend very knowledgeable about cooking and great restaurants pronounced their rack of lamb the best he'd ever had. The Longview Steakhouse is always tops on my list and the drive through the foothills of Alberta only adds to the total experience.
