A co-worker is somehow related to the owners of Sal's. I have taken the family twice... and both times was sorely disappointed. First of all - this is not 'hibachi' cooking. A hibachi is a cast-iron charcoal grill - not gas under a hot steel plate. Having lived in Japan - I'm under the impression that there are no 'Japanese' people running or cooking at the restaurant. This doesn't mean a thing, other than it was something I noticed. The 'show' by our latino chef was mildly amusing. He had no special skill. The food was over-priced and horrid by Japanese standards. everything was over-sauced or over-oiled. He used so much soy - we were bloated due to salt consumption the next day. On the first visit, the kids wanted their meat 'plain' and the chef ignored our request and loaded it up with soy sauce. I realize that Sal's was arguably the first 'Japanese Steakhouse' in Wichita - but how it has survived this long is beyond my comprehension. I am generally very tolerant of restaurants, because I know the challenges that they have... this place is pretty bad.

My friends and I go here every payday like a ritual! The chef's have awesome presence and the prices are really good for a hibachi grill. They even offer sushi fo the real asian fanatics among us! Awesome food and awesome times!

Here's the place for Hibachi food. My girlfriend and I have tried several Japanese Steakhouses around town, and while we may try others since we've been to Sal's, we always return to Sal's. We compare them to Sal's. Always prompt seating, Fun, flamboyant chefs, and ample amounts of great food.
