My parents went to NS when it was a speak-easy in the 40-50's and I have continued dining at NS from the 60's to now. The quality of the food and service went down when Blind Tiger bought it over - which is sad. Compared to other restaurants in Topeka, it's still the best. We like that it's dark and fairly quiet. Not as quiet as it used to be. They try to cram too many people in that center section. Best steaks in town - fries and gravy can't be beat! The only restuarant we go to in Topeka.

Everytime we go to Kansas we always have to go to The North Star. Great food, love the intimate atmosphere. We absolutely love the place, wish there was something like it in our area!

There was not a good menu selection, the steaks were burned, there was hair in the gravy. There childrens selection well there were only 2 options. EXTREMELY DARK! gravy was nasty, it was just an unplesent experience, the waitress was good. go to the plantation its way better!

There is no other place like it in the 21st century. The neon and glass block counter and the jukebox with Sinatra singing Happy Birthday. Steaks cooked on a flat top (the don't do it that way very often) and hand cut fries with chicken gravey. It had speakeasy written all over it.
I used to expect to see a gangster (or at least a moll) but never did.

My father went there in the 30's when it was a speakeasy roadhouse and I went there in the 60's when it had become a steakhouse. A group I was with was in Topeka Saturday evening, and discovering it was still open, we went out there -it was wonderful, food was great and beer was cold.

A friend of mine was raving over the steak he had on a visit to the North Star, so we decided to try it ourselves (I wasn't aware it was still open). WOW! Steak was great and perfectly cooked. Hashbrown's were a different side dish, but very good. This is my new favorite restaurant in Topeka! One recommendation, unless you have some time on your hands, make reservations. The secret is out on this place!

This is by far the best steak I have had in years. Quality is just as good as the fancy steak places in KC where you will pay twice the amount of money. The gravy and fries - don't miss. A must stop and landmark for Topeka.
