Restaurant Description

The German Cafe has been in operation by the same family since 1985! We offer the finest in German cuisine and American fare for those less adventurous.

My husband and I have spent several vacations in Germany and absolutely adore German food. While there were not too many choices on the menue, we found the food to be excellent! Also - the deserts were incredible - very good! Looking forward to another trip to Wilmington just to eat the food.

Word of advice - the restaurant, while located at the Cotton Exchange, is not on Front Street as the address implies, it is on the back side fo the Cotton Exchange!

I just had the occasion to spend a couple of days in Wilmington and was happy to find a German restaurant in such a small city. While the owner claims "authentic" German cuisine, the reality is quite different. While the dishes are tasty and plentiful they are nevertheless unimaginative. Just about every entree in the menu comes with potatoe salad and kraut (Rotkraut in German). You would think that is all Germans eat. Whatever happened to Bratkartoffeln or Spaetzle or Knoedel or Pommes Frites ? Autentic German food? Hardly.

From the Friendly Smiling guard who waves you into the Exclusive Parking lot whose Centerpiece is the Wilmington Walk of Fame Featuring Wilmington’s own crop of Celebrities and Artists. To the Hand Made Bricks that lend their warm red tones and Historic Vibe to the Famous Cotton Exchange, the German Café Experience starts with an impressive ambiance both Pleasing and Soothing. Once you walk through the double doors you are farther transported, not just back in time, but to GERMANY! The combination of Brickwork and Rustic Timbers lit with stained glass lampshades and Authentic Black Forrest Coo-Coo Clocks and the multi levels of seating choice make finding just the perfect comfort zone for perching and Dining easy to accomplish. The Hostess and Waitresses are all costumed in charming and colorful German apparel. For those who are familiar with German Cuisine the menu is sure to take you back down memory lane. If you are unfamiliar you will be in Good Hands as your Waitress will skillfully help you choose from a Fine selection of Light and Dark German Beers. The Menu is prepared by Chef Harvey Hudson who has the Unique skill of making Authentic and Fancy Food that is also Hardy and just Real Good Eats! Chef Hudson is also Warm and Personable and speaks fondly of the many Fans who still write for recipes from his days as a Television Chef. If you are looking for someplace special, memorable AND a filling Dinner The GERMAN CAFÉ is a MUST TRY and a Tradition for my Family and Wilmington! Come Prepared for DESERT after Diner. The selection of Napoleons and other Fabulous Sweets is an Art Form that every one should experience! I would give it Five Stars! *****
