Restaurant Description

Welcome to the Boll Weevil Cafe and Sweetery. We are often asked about the history of our restaurant and the surrounding area. Our main building with the old hand hewn beams was constructed prior to 1850 as one of several cotton warehouses on the property. In fact most of the riverfront land in Augusta during the 1850's was used for some aspect of the cotton trade.

In 1919 Fredrick Harrison, a young freight clerk with C&WC, bought the then abandoned cotton sheds across from the station and started Reliable Transfer Company which delivered freight from the railroad to downtown businesses on mule drawn wagons. The office was located in the small red dining room in the front and the arched opening in the wall housed a pot bellied stove.

During the 1930's a fire destroyed the rear of the building and a few years later a tornado severely damaged the front facade. In the 50's Fred Harrison Jr. used the property to warehouse furniture for his business T.R. Maxwell Furniture. T.R. Maxwell prospered and warehousing was moved to a better building across the street in the late 60's. By 1990 Fred Jr. was nearing retirement so his son George Harrison decided to open a small restaurant on the property his grandfather had purchased more than 70 years prior.

Because two of our neighboring restaurants were named Cotton Row, and The Cotton Patch we decided to name our restaurant after the cotton-eating insect. In spite of the fact we opened in an industrial area on a dead end street and named our restaurant after a bug, we have survived for over 18 years. Our approach to dining is to provide a totally unique high quality experience with fresh breads, home baked desserts, and great tasting chef prepared dishes at casual dining prices. Thanks to hard working, dedicated staff and a great customer base, we have enjoyed success. If everything is not 100% your satisfaction, please ask to see our manager on duty.

I was VERY dissapointed! The lettuce was old and brown, the bread was hard and stale, And they soaked our subs in vinegar. While I love the one on Tobacco Rd, we will never go to the Wrightsboro Road store again.

The sub is the best. The service depends on when you go and who is working but it is always worth the trip. They have a daily special for $3.49 that is the best value in town.

I was invited to lunch by a co-worker that is leaving our department. I must say I was not impressed. The jerk chicken salad that we ordered was old and tasteless. The young lady that sat us had a BAD attitude (she displayed this same attitude when I called back to complain about my dessert being uncooked!)....speaking of UNCOOKED...I paid 6 dollars for an UNCOOKED slice of Canary Cake. The manager refused to swap the slice of cake for something different. HIS EXCUSE: OUR cakes are so moist they just taste uncooked. I will NEVER visit the Boll Weevil again. Also the place is very musty smelling and untidy.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. The homemade bread and the homemade desserts are the best in town. I live in Augusta and I recommend this place to anyone that visits Augusta.

We went to the Boll Weevil Masters week with friends and had a great experience the place is charming, the staff friendly, the food delicious, and well priced. I had the shrimp and grits, and my husband had the pork chops with apple topping both were excellent, and you won't believe the dessert case.

Okay, evidently, this restaurant hasn't had a 'sanity' check in awhile. Who cleans the bathrooms? Bad, bad, bad. No way would I ever return. This restaurant was recommended by the tourist info employees, they must be relatives. Bread was old, deserts were old, and the wait staff....very lethargic. We were there after 8, so maybe that contributed to slower service, but there were empty tables and no wait at the door. Bad experience!

After dining at Boll Weevils for about 3 years now, I recommened it to 8 business associated last night. What an embarrasing and disappointing evening. No one got there food at the same time. My seafood bisque had no seafood in it(which is my favorite). My meal got there 30 minutes after everyone elses at which time I did not even want it anymore. One person never did get his meal. He finally canceled it. Smart man. They gave me a 50% discount on my meal, but charged me the full amount for gratuity. They have lost a few customers and I have probably lost some friends.

Let me start by saying this restaurant has the best desserts ever! However, the rest of the food is nowhere as good. I am a bread lover and this is probably the only restaurant that I have ever been to where the bread leaves a lot to be desired. It never tastes fresh and I have been to this restaurant for several dining experiences. The rest of the food is not anything that I would crave. The ambiance is pretty out dated and the restaurant can use a major makeover. If you have a sweet tooth I would definitely recommend this restaurant for its large selection of cakes and pies.

We were there with a group. I I had the Boll Weevil salad (mixed greens and tenderloin strips) it was probably the best salad that I have ever tasted. They bake their own bread my wife had the Curious George sandwich and loved it. The place was cozy and charming. I give it an A+

Food was mediocre. I ordered the boll weevil burger with the chili and house salad. I was expecting a decent sized burger, but when it arrived i was not impressed at all. The burger at Chilis or Applebees is much bigger. Burger was also a bit salty. The chili was especially salty. The menu said the burger was supposed to come with a whole wheat bun, but my burger came out with a white sourdough bun which was COLD. Salad was definately not fresh. Some of the lettuce leaves were a bit brown. The bread that came out before the meal did not taste fresh although I am quite picky when it comes to bread. Maybe it was a bad night, but I was definately expecting a lot more from this restaurant.

The Jerk Chicken sandwich, although pretty good, didn't have enough heat for this chili-head and required a boost from some of the establishment's Habanero Fire hot sauce. The raspberry cheesecake needed no such amendment - it was excellent.
