I have been to Saybrook fish house many times and I have to say I have had only bad experience, and that did not stop me from going. I do have to tell people that want to go on a Saturday night to go before 6PM since it can get crowded at times. All of the staff give great service and the food is great and there is plenty of it. I alwasy bring some home since I can not finish the food on my plate. I feel that for the price you get your moneys worth. I do not think that this resturant is overpriced. I would reccommend this resturant to all of my friends.

Was a little leery after seeing a couple not so good reviews on this site, but ended up having a very nice meal. The honey ginger salmon over sweet potatoes was probably the nicest salmon I've had. My husband said his petite sirloin was good too. Service was great, atmosphere a little stuffy, but overall happy with the meal.

After my dining experience last night, I thought that it was necessary to warn future diners. My husband and I had made reservations earlier in the day. When we arrived there were four parties waiting, all of whom had reservations as well. We waited less than ten minutes, but the smell of urine emanating from an unknown place made the wait brutal. We should have left, but we were starving and the place packed at 7:15 pm. I thought that was a good sign. I was wrong. The waitress was wonderful, and the wine was good. The bread was warm and limp; could they possible have steamed it? The meals are large and seemed to be cooked properly. The bathroom, I discovered upon leaving, was absolutely trashed; like one you would find in a truck stop.
Unfortunately, it wasn't until an hour into the meal that I started to feel sick. Even the next day, today, I am nauseous, stomach pains, cramping and have had extreme lethargy all day. I consumed only one glass of wine during the course of 2 1/2 hours, so that is not it! I have no appetite nearly 24 hours later.
I do not recommend eating at this establishment. I have no idea why there are so many people eating there. They must have iron stomach and no sense of smell. Beware.

One star only because the clam chowder (which was served lukewarm) was good. Service: We were seated by a dark place in front of the fireplace because we appeared with 4 instead of the 5 people for whom I had reserved a large round table. Ambience: don't sit near the kitchen door like we did. I ordered clam bellies for twelve bucks as an appetizer--they were terrible--I am sorry I didn't send them back but did not want to cause my fellow tablemates this scene. The bread had been STEAMED! It was floppy and impossible to butter. The carrot cake was very cold and appeared to have icing on it as opposed to cream cheese frosting. Definitely NOT recommended.

If you love seafood, and I do, this is a great place to dine. I recommend the mussels in white wine sauce, the steamers, broiled oysters, shrimp scampi, grilled and spiced shrip, and the sea scallops. Stay with the steamed and broiled seafood for best quality. The baked stuffed shrimp and crab cakes are good but a bit on the bready side. The fried whole-belly clams are something to which you should treat yourself at least once a year. Service is excellent in the main dining room but can be a bit sparse in the tap room, depending on the day and the time. The wine list is more than adequate and the ambience is pleasant and comfortable. But the seafood is the star!

have been to this restaurant a number of times and it struck me last evening as i was walking out how consistently enjoyable the experience always is for us. have tried several menu items and they are all delicious. they seem to be able to hold on to a great wait staff. they are casual and friendly and there when you need them but not in your face every minute. the lounge is a nice relaxing place to meet friends and you can chat all night and never feel like youre they are looking to turn the table over. there is a lighter lounge menu that is very reasonably priced and although apparently the portions are smaller than the regular menu, i can hardly tell the difference. cant speak highly enough about this well managed, really excellent little restaurant.

I go to this restaurant at least twice a year and only order off the appetizer menu for nostalgic reasons, and the apps are great! One thing I can say that's disappointing is that they are big fans of consume' (beef broth) and put it in practically EVERYTHING. Don't assume if you are a vegetarian that the salad dressing is ok to eat on your salad! I was very upset when I found this out because I've been a vegetarian for years, but I go to the restaurant to celebrate the life of my grandmother, and it's something I'll always do, so now I have to be extra careful when ordering and bring my own dressing!

Having been to this restaurant a year or so ago, today's experience did not measure up to the first visit. The service was slow, we were not informed about all the inclusions on the dinners ordered, and the two seafood dinners were just mediocre. Very disappointing!
