For my first visit to New York and Harlem, I wanted a true soul food dining experience. Miss Mamies was that. We had the good fortune to sit with a couple who ate there every Sunday and had recommended the fried chicken. With both of us loving comfort food my girlfriend and I chose it with sides of macaroni and cheese and green beans. For $13.95 this was one of the best, most reasonable meals we had in New York. The food was delicious, abundant and our server friendly, providing great service. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a truly soulful, homemade meal.

I have lived near Spoon Bread for over 10 yrs. From time to time I have have dinner there, mostly because it is convenient. The service is always average, the food nothing special and the prices are a bit high.
Last Thanksgiving, with family visiting, I made advanced reservation for my group of 7. The 7 of us, including two children and my sister who was at the time undergoing breast cancer treatment, stood in the cold for well over an hour awaiting our table. I made the reservation so my sister and family wouldnt have to walk far in the cold!
The staff seemed as though they really could not care less. It was simply outrageous that they overbooked to this extent, which, combined with the marginal food, makes this place one you can pass over, nothing lost.
Dont play into the whole "southern home cookin'" hype. It does not excuse a 3rd rate restaurant.
