A brief history on our namesake...Born in 1882, Joyce was raised in Dublin city, which at the time suffered some of the worst poverty in Europe. He drew on his own experiences of the city when he wrote his most famous book "Ulysess" in 1922.

After college he moved to Paris to study medicine but quickly gave it up to dedicate himself to writing. He moved to Zurich in 1904 where he became an English teacher and published his first book "Dubliners". Other titles by Joyce include "Finnegan's Wake" and "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man".

The life and works of James Joyce are commemorated each year on 16th June, known as "Bloomsday". This is a significant date as it marks the day he first met his future wife Nora Barnacle in 1904 and it was on this date that he based the narrative fo "Ulysess". The story follows the main character, Leopold Bloom, as he spends the day traveling around Dublin and recalls the many different & colorful characters he encounters.

From 1920's onwards, James suffered from chronic eye problems due to glaucoma. He had many painful eye operations during his life. He died in 1941 and is buried in Zurich.
