I did some research before coming here the first time after my friend recommended it. The chef apparently worked at Schezuan House in John's Creek before moving to Buford Highway and it's a family run establishment. It might explain the great service - it seems like the employees care about making your dining experience enjoyable.

I have been here 4 times and the food is really good. It's comparable to Tasty China or Peter Chang's, with some added benefits. It's much cleaner than the other two places, the service is 100 times better, and the food at the other 2 places makes me feel thirsty for hours after my meal. I don't get this "I am thirsty forever" feeling after eating here.

Here is what I tried on my few visits:

Cumin Lamb - My friend and I wanted to initially order Cumin Beef but the waiter suggested to try the lamb. We did and the dish was good: soft, tender, and plenty of spice absorbed into the meat. The lamb did not have a smell, which was good.

Chongqing Chicken - Diced chicken in a basket with plenty of red chili peppers. It was pretty tasty and there was plenty of chicken.

Fish in Hot Pot - The tilapia has a great texture, filled with a lot of vegetables. The bowl was huge, probably serves 3-4 people easily. Although it had 3 stars on the menu, it wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be. This was good, but I probably favor the non-soupy dishes.

Chicken in Toothpicks - This was a special of the day - chicken and peppercorns on a toothpick with garlic, green peppers, chili, etc. Nice flavor on the chicken and nice spicy kick to the meat. I am not sure if the toothpicks were necessary, it just slowed down how quickly I could eat them!

Jumbo Shrimp with Walnuts - Fried shrimp with cantaloupe, honeydew, and walnuts. It was a bit sweet, and not spicy. Nice dish to have if you order a lot of spicy dishes.

Chicken with Spicy Peppers - can't remember the exact name of the dish but it had green and red chili peppers with diced chicken. It was one of the spicier dishes we ate. Some bites were really hot!

Tea Smoked Duck - recommended by the staff, the duck was so flavorful. It tasted like authentic BBQ. It was extremely flavorful and not spicy. Plenty of meat even though there were a few bones.

Scallops (not sure what the name was (Schezuan Scallops?)) but it was spicy, served with a bed of broccoli. Nice texture, the scallops literally melted in your mouth and did a great job of absorbing the spice.

I'm glad my friend found this place and you probably want to compare this to Peter Chang's or Tasty China. I think the chef here has just as much skill as Peter, but I think we haven't tried the best dishes at Gu's. Once we get a better feel of the menu, I would probably say it's better because the service is MUCH better and the plates, spoons, chopsticks, etc. are cleaner than Peter Chang's. Water is refiled on time and the staff is attentive to your needs. Granted, the restaurant was half filled at the time, but they still were on top of everything. This place is much closer to work and home so that also is a plus.

You may want to be clear on the spice level. If you order off the Chinese menu and see three stars, it's probably too spicy for the average person. When my friend and I ordered a 3-star spicy dish, the waiter warned us about the spice. We told him we could handle it and they did a good job cooking the food. If you REALLY want it spicy, you can request additional stars, but be careful! I'll definitely be back here at least once a week!
