I've been eating at Carey Hilliards for the past 25 years...the food and service is ALWAYS great. And now they have the "value" menu so I can eat for about $5....and not be miserably full when I leave there. We ate at the one in pooler last night and it was awesome! I've eaten at Hilliards hundreds of times and am always ready to go back!

Hungry and weary from long drive for a funeral we expected a decent lunch. 11:30 09/27/09, my husband, sister, mother and myself (63, 49, 82, 62 respectively). Ordered 4 BBQ plates w Brunswick Stew, pulled pork & slaw. Brunswick Stew? We could not eat the vinegary, spicey concoction that did not resemble Brunswick Stew. Pork was smoothered in cold sauce. Loaf bread had the cut edges only dunked/saturated in "butter". Cole slaw was dry. Within 30 minutes of leaving restaurant onto I 95 south, two of his were sick with diarrhea and had to make multiple stops. 3rd was sick before arriving home. The WORST restaurant food I've ever encountered! Pitiful. More attention to the food and less to decor would be in this business' best interest. NEVER again. Were we local I would have called the health department. I would not offer a single star for food, 1 was the only option.

I have visited the Carey Hilliards many times. Every time I go the food gets worse and worse. They served my family re-fried fries “horrible”. I do not understand what kind of establishment would do such a thing. Nevertheless they even sold me some so called fish bites, which I have eaten before and now it’s a different fish and breading; but yet they charge more for a worse dish. The fish was thin as an Au Gratin potato, not to mention it was hard and inedible. It took nearly 30 minutes for them to cook my food, and then it was bad food when they finally brought it. The Mac & Cheese simply tasted cheap, pretty sure its powdered cheese, not quality...!!! They have a big sign that says no cell phones and I walk in and the hostess that should be greeting us is texting her boyfriend. This restaurant has poor quality food, inconsistent service and food, and an unprofessional staff. I would advise anyone, do not waste your time or money on Carey Hilliards.

I have been eating here since I was a child. I now live in Fl. Recently was in Savannah for vacation. I love the BBQ plate, but for the first time, I could not eat the Brunswick stew. It was so spicy and hot I was unable to eat it. It was NEVER this hot ever before. You have lost several loyal customers in Savannah because of this. I wish you could make the stew like you used to and you would have all of us come back.

I grew up eating at carey Hilliards. The service is fast and the food comes out quick. My mom worked for The original Mr Hilliard in the 60s on Skidway Road. My Favorite is the Bq Plate. I alway's order the same thing. I love the sweet tea.. I also like the hamburger steak and club sandwich. I will continue to eat there until I am dead and gone. I eat once a month. We need one in Richmond hill, Ga. I would eat out more often. Consider one closer to the Hill.

Sincerely,
Loyal customer

I've eaten at Hilliard's on Skidaway (and all other locations) since it opened. I also ate REGULARLY at Bill Hilliard's in Thunderbolt.

I give ALL 3's because Hilliard's, once "Savannah's Favorite" is no longer consistent. You simply take "pot luck" when you go to ANY of their locations. Sometimes food is good, sometimes service is good, sometimes the restaurants are clean, etc.

Maybe Timmy needs to look real hard at his establishments and CLEAN HOUSE...........Savannah deserves better!

This place is stuck in the 70's. The owners are so out of touch. This is the type of place that I go when I have been doing yard work or cleaning fish and havent had a shower yet. The music that they have playing is enough to make you puke.

Horrible place to eat! My boyfriend and I wanted to try something new today so we decided to try one of Savannah's well known restaurants. Needless to say, i was not pleased.I guess our waitress was new cause she sucked ( coming from a waitress myself). Our appetizers took forever to come out, and when they finally appeared our waitress informed us that our food was ready! REALLY! how long does it take to scoop some soup in a bowl and chill some shrimp with cocktail sauce? My crab stew had obviously been sitting out for a while cause a film had covered it, so we sent them back. The food was cold and HORRIBLE. You could tell it had been sitting under the heat lamp. But the real sad thing was..people around us were also complaining how slow service was, and it was not even busy.. here is a good tip, if you want good local food, eat at the SHELL HOUSE.

My mother and I were traveling from New Jersey and we pulled over at Carey Hilliards in Pooler. We ordered the seafood platter and the shrimp platter. This was tv dinner food absolutely the worse food at a restaurant we have ever eaten at. The shrimp were about a 1/4 inch tyre the type you would use in a shrimp salad. It was pathetic! We were laughing and thought we were on candid camera. We got up, paid our bill and left! Learn how to do it right Carey!

I'm from Savannah and recently moved to Pooler. The past few times I've ordered 'to go', either the order was wrong or food tasted terrible. I decided to give it one more chance and ordered a BQ plate with cheesy potato..which was an extra charge. The BQ tasted like it had been sitting in water (mushy) and the potato dish consisted of a cheesy paste and was not served it a potato shell. I called to complain and got an 'I'm sorry'. If the weather was better outside, I would have returned. The manager told me I could bring it back tomorrow and they would exchange. Right...

HAD THE SEAFOOD PLATTER, EXCELLENT!! A FAMILY RESTAURANT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS BUILT IN THE 60'S AND HASN'T BEEN UPDATED SINCE. NOT A FANCY PLACE BUT I ENJOYED VERY MUCH. EVERY ONE WAS VERY COURTEOUS. GENUINE SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY. SEAFOOD WAS TOP FLIGHT AND VERY REASONABLE. OFTEN EVEN IN THE FANCIER RESTAURANTS THE SEAFO0D TASTES "FISHY", NOT SO HERE AND MY PLATTER ON THE MENU GOES FOR $12.59, I THINK IT WAS ON SPECIAL FOR $11.50.

I am from Savannah but for the past 10+ years have lived outside of GA. Anytime I go to Savannah, I eat at Carey Hilliards. Usually once a day, though I have found myself eating lunch and dinner there. I am always telling my family to UPS Carey Hilliard's to me. They can put it on dry ice and send it to me in TX. If I were able, I would buy a franchise and open a CH in Plano (people in TX DO NOT know good seafood!)

In the past I have eaten at Carey Hilliards and was sad to find that the food and service was not what it use to be. We ordered the crab chowder and for almost $10.00 a "CUP" you would think they would remove the bones from the crab meat. It was terrible having to pick stuff out of your mouth with every bite. Service was extremely slow and the waitress never came to check on us. We were there over an hour before they brought out our childs plate, BarBQ plate and a BarBQ sandwich. The brunswick stew that came with that food tasted old and burned. No waitress to complain to and when we did get our bill from the waitress we told her and her answer was oh you should have flagged me down and told me. I am sorry to say we were Very Unhappy with our visit.

We live in Effingham county just outside Savannah, Ga. We have eaten at the relatively new Carey Hilliards in Pooler several times. Each time the food and service gets worse. The restaurant looks like its been open for years(dirty, rundown). Yesterday we waited 20 minutes to sit down and it took over an hour to get our food after we ordered. The burgers and fries were cold, the salad small and tasteless, and the pork sandwich also cold and poorly assembled. The couple next to us left after an hour without getting their food. The waitress apologized as if it was common affair there. It is! Save yourself, eat somewhere else or don't eat at all , you'll be better off! We will never go there again. I can't say eat there again because you can't call what you get there food! Shameful establishment.

This is the best "southern" cooking restaurant in Savannah! There are several locations. Very kid friendly, but can be noisy and crowded. Very good chicken!! Good service, too. I have been back to Savannah several times, and each time this place has been very good! Very popular!

I am a Native of Savannah, and Carey Hillards has always been a very nice place to dine, but lately, it has gone down hill. I am so upset because I eat out at least 2 times per week, and I use to frequent Carey Hillards alot. Today I went there and the sweet tea was awful, it use to be the best in town. The waiter was new. He did not tell us he was new, but you could tell because he took our order, and then repeated it back wrong, re-took our order, repeated it back wrong again. We went back and forth from the begining about 3 times. I don't see a four piece chicken finger plate and brunswick stew being that hard to write down. We ordered appetizer's, and they ended up coming with our meal about 30 minutes later. This normally only took Carey Hillards 15-20 minutes in the past. It was only myself and my husband. After telling the cashier about our terrible experience, she just said she was "sorry", and we paid. I told her that I would call corporate (Abercorn) because that was my worst experience ever. I am the person who usually ask for the manager to compliment people because they deserve it. I don't recommended anyone go to Carey Hillards until they get back to the old ways. They need to remove their employees who don't care about their job, and get the ones who care about the customer back.

3rd straight dinning experience where our food quality was horrible and the service was really bad. When I told the waiter and cashier / manager I was dissatified with the quality of food they replied "that they were sorry". In other words, its the normal news to them. No big deal, just pay and move along. Additionally, the booth area where we sat was filthy. I will not eat at this restaurant again. Its over for me after 20+ years of dinning at Carey Hilliards. Barnes here I come.

I am originally from Savannah Georgia and I grew up eating at this fine resturaunt...but as of late as they keep expanding their quality is going DOWN HILL! I recently ate at the one in Pooler, GA (which is a suburb of Savannah.) and my seafood was so greasy I had heartburn for the rest of the day. My waiter was a RUDE German kid...I could barely understand what he was saying because his accent was so thick, and I actually saw a roach crawling on the wood on the booth. The only thing that is good anymore is they still give you crayons and a placemat to color! I say stay away until they clean their act up!

The food was good and the service was good but when you pay with your debit card they automatically take out 20% for a tip without telling you. So if you leave a cash tip on the table you will also be charged for one on your bill. This happened to me technicaly left a 40%. I will never go back!!!!

They are reasonably priced, child friendly and the food is great quality for the price. I fed a family of 5 for under $40.00 WOW!!!! If you decide to stop make sure to try the Brunswick stew it is spicey but excellent!
